The Junior development program starts this weekend, with a velodrome session on Sunday 12th October. All TriSA junior members over 13 years of age are welcome to attend. Please call Nigel on 0413399453 if you’re interested. Full details have been emailed to all juniors and also to each of the Clubs, so if you don’t have or can’t find the information, ask your Club contact to forward it on to you (the TriSA office will be unattended from Friday 10th to Monday 13th October inclusive).
The links on our previous message were not working and have now been fixed.
For those interested in the Ironman world champs in Kona this weekend, our very own Windmagnet (Richard Pryor) has posted some very informative and highly entertaining reports on the forum. One of my favourite bits: “There is a boat out in the water serving coffees for the swimmers. When will we get one of these at West Lakes?” Maybe when we start doing 3.8km swims in West Lakes!
Another of our young triathlete's, Krystal Smith, had a nasty bike accident earlier in the week resulting in a broken collar bone. Krystal will be out of action for 6-8 weeks, but is looking forward to getting back in the saddle as soon as she can – that’s the spirit Krystal, on behalf of TriSA I wish you a speedy recovery.
Which means the Tour Down Under will be HUGE! The community event on Friday 23rd January 2009 will be limited to 5000 entrants, and is sure to sell out. Please note that team registrations close on Friday 21st November 2008. This kind of exposure for cycling will hopefully have the flow-on effect of making South Australian drivers more aware of cyclists on the road and (dare we hope?) more tolerant of bikes in general.
Next Wednesday the 15th October is another great vehicle (no pun intended!) for increasing drivers’ awareness of cyclists and reinforcing the “share the road” message. For those who register, there’s a free breakfast from 7-9am at the Northern end of Victoria Square, and at a number of other locations throughout metropolitan and regional SA. Have a look at www.ride2work.com.au for details. |
For those interested in giving triathlon a go for the first time, details of TriSA’s Tristart beginner’s clinics and the Triple Sprint (beginner’s) triathlon on 23/11/08 have now been added to the website under “Beginners”.
The Tristart Membership Package includes Triathlon SA membership, entry to the Beginners Clinics, entry to the Triple Sprint triathlon and membership of a club of your choice for a special first-timers price of just $145 (normal value of about $270). You can check out all our clubs on the website- under Training, click on Clubs and it will bring up all their links. Have a look at which one suits you geographically and in terms of training schedules and so on, and call the contact person specified for any information on a particular club.
Unfortunately we’re not able to process Tristart applications on-line, so if you’d like to join you’ll need to print out the membership form and send it in with payment to TriSA, PO Box 6001 Halifax St, Adelaide 5000. |
Triathlon South Australia’s Committee has endorsed strong support for the Challenge Series races to be held in Adelaide over the weekend of 29 and 30 November. The three races – an Enticer, a sprint Triathlon and an Olympic distance Triathlon are already attracting a high level of interstate support, providing SA triathletes with the opportunity to measure their performance against national standards. Although the event is still seven weeks away, almost 150 interstate triathletes have already entered. Only about 30 SA triathletes have entered so far, so we need all of you to show that South Australians will turn out for major races.
Both the Sprint and Olympic Distance Triathlons are the first qualifying races for Australian Team selection for the World Championships to be held on the Gold Coast in September 2009, and provide South Australians with a chance to gain points at home towards qualification.
There has been uninformed comment on forums regarding the swim leg and water quality. TriSA has been in regular contact with TA and the race director, and two swim course options are being maintained. The preference is for the Patawalonga to avoid possible rough water, but this will be subject to water quality checks. The second is an open water swim adjacent to the Glenelg Pier. SA Water/EPA records show that since the alterations to the Pat in 2006, water quality has only been outside World Health guidelines on three occasions, and always after heavy rain. The Pat readings have actually been lower than West Lakes at similar times.
We urge all South Australian triathletes to participate in the Challenge Series events. We are hoping to get senior SA government representatives to come to the race as part of a campaign to attract increased support for the sport in SA. It should be a great weekend.
For more information and to enter the race please go to this website http://www.challengeseries.org.au

Peter Smith

South Australian triathlete's will be well represented in the Ironman World Championships in Kona next month.
Sylvia Dansie (55-59) was the first South Australian to qualify for Kona this year, and is the first Port Lincoln triathlete ever to qualify for the world championships. Sylvia competed in her first ironman at Busselton WA last December, winning the 50-54 age group.
We also have four members of the Lakers heading to Hawaii:
* Andrena Moore (55-59) has been competing in triathlons for 20 years, but only entered her first IM in Pt Macquarie this year, winning her age group.
* Nancy Cullen (50-54) started triathlons just two years ago and also won her age group in Pt Mac in April.
* Mary Mitchell (45-49) completed her first Australian IM in 2004 and claimed a spot in Hawaii this year through the lottery draw. She will be following this up with a half IM in Florida a month later.
* Last but not least, Richard Pryor (50-54) qualified at IM New Zealand earlier this year, and has completed two other IM races, at NZ and Port Mac.
We wish them all the best of luck and look forward to following their
progress on ironmanlive.com on the day. Go girls! (and Richard!!)
The latest update from Chris's family is very positive. Chris is recovering well, although he will be in a brace for 3 months, and is "lucky" not to have suffered more severe injuries. I think Chris is certainly lucky to have such a supportive family, and wish them all well as he continues to recover.
Nigel Pietsch is managing the Juniors program this season. Please contact Nigel with any enquiries: nigel@corporatefit.com.au Details should be updated on the website soon (below).
Beginners can now register for our TriStart Package. - a special first-timers price of $145 includes TriSA membership, Club membership of your choice, entry to the Triple Sprint Triathlon on 23/11/08 and entry to 5 beginners clinics held on Saturday afternoons in the lead-up to the Triple Sprint.
Please contact admin@triathlonsa.org.au for further information.
With Lance Armstrong making a comeback in the Tour Down Under next year, the 5000 places available for entrants to the Mutual Community Challenge Event are likely to fill fast. Anyone thinking of registering should probably get onto it soon.
Wednesday 15 October is National Ride to Work Day – see www.ride2work.com.au for information or to register.
A number of sports clinics for children are running during the Sept/Oct School Holidays – you can check out the program at the Office for Recreation and Sport website www.recsport.sa.gov.au under their News items.
Also for the kids, SA Road Runners Club is holding the Adelaide Kids Marathon in conjunction with the annual Christmas Frolic on Sunday 7 December 2008. The idea is for school age children to complete a cumulative marathon, starting in mid-October and adding to their total each week, with the final event being 2.195km around the Torrens Lake. It’s a great way to introduce kids to running in a gradual, fun way. From there, it’s just a swim and a bike ride and they’ll be ready for triathlons! |
G’day juniors
Sorry about not keeping you all in the loop, however there have been so many questions to be answered before we could promote this year’s junior program. While I have some of the answers there are still plenty I am working on.
The full details of the program will be out shortly however the plan will involve the following

- Training to involve 2 months preparation for time trials

- Sunday training activities including
o Velodrome
o Bike time trials and runs off bike
o Open water swimming skills
o Aquathlon and velodrome duathlon
- There will be at least 2 and maybe 3 spots available for our best juniors to attend the TA national camp at runaway bay in December. This will be funded by TriSA and TA.
